FDA says kits to edit human genes are illegal. But what does that mean?

Share it

T. he Food and Drug Administration this week made an announcement that sounded quite definitive: It’s illegal to sell do-it-yourself kits to edit human genes.

“FDA is aware that gene therapy products intended for self-administration and ‘do it yourself’ kits to produce gene therapies for self-administration are being made available to the public,” according to an FDA website updated Tuesday.

“The sale of these products is against the law.” This is a STAT Plus article and you can unlock it by subscribing to STAT Plus today.

It means the FDA will create a black market for gene editing and that innovation in this field will come at great risk and harm to many people as a result. Regulation is important but an outright ban is dangerously naive policy.
